2017 was a difficult year for so many people around the globe. Tzu Chi Relief was there to provide aid with attentive care and love. We’ve selected our top ten photos to recap our disaster relief and charity missions worldwide. As you view them, remember that it’s all because of you that we are able to be in all the places we’ve been to this year.

1

Mexico

On September 19, 2017, just as thousands in Mexico had been commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake, another massive magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck, causing extensive damage and tremendous heartbreak. Tzu Chi Relief mobilized swiftly, our mission benefiting 10,355 households, and providing crucial medical outreach to 4,491 people.

2

Santa Rosa Wildfire

The scenes of devastation in Santa Rosa, California, left a lasting impression on all, the fires that ignited on October 8th being the first of several tremendous wildfires that would burn over 245,000 acres. Our distributions provided financial aid that’s helping impacted families rise up from the ashes to rebuild their lives.

3

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near the Texas Gulf Coast on August 25, bringing days of relentless rain with it, and flooding entire communities. We began assessment in the hardest hit areas, and the mission that followed emerged as a milestone for Tzu Chi Relief, as we went on to provide $7,010,700 in disaster aid.

4

SoCal Wildfire

This year has been the most destructive fire season on record in California, forcing families to flee their homes without a moment’s notice, and no certainty as to what would remain when they returned. Our ongoing Southern California wildfire relief has provided $25,600 so far.

5

Sierra Leone

On August 14th, a horrendous tragedy was unleashed on the people of Sierra Leone, intense rain spurring a mudslide that tore down a crowded hillside in Regent, a town on the outskirts of Freetown, the nation’s capital. Our long term charity aid began post-Ebola, and continues providing hot meals and much-needed support.

6

Haiti

The impact of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti lingers on, as many lost their homes and their only source of income, and haven’t recovered since then. Our long-term disaster aid distributions have benefited 286,500 individuals, focusing on the persistent demand for food, particularly in rural areas where the disaster heavily affected agriculture.

7

Ecuador Flood

It seemed that as soon as the people of Ecuador had gotten back on their feet after last year’s earthquake, another disaster struck, flooding many of the same communities. We set out quickly, initiating a Cash-For-Relief program that provided 14,625 temporary job opportunities, and a total of $219,780 in aid.

8

Hurricane Irma

The catastrophic power behind Hurricane Irma caused widespread damage, and our volunteers provided $386,000 in aid, benefiting 3,568 people in hard-hit areas like Immokalee, Everglades City, and Naples. In recognition of our efforts, Penny Taylor, Chairman of the Collier County Commissioners, proclaimed October 10 as “Tzu Chi Foundation Day” in Collier County.

9

San Jose Flood

When San Jose, California, was faced with record flooding after days of relentless downpours, over 14,000 residents evacuated with haste. We quickly organized, providing several distributions of cash cards, giving a total of $145,100 in financial aid that would help 1,750 impacted individuals begin to recover.

10

Midwest Flood

Torrential rains submerged entire communities across the Midwest this year, and we quickly organized relief distributions of direct financial assistance, as well as crucial emotional support, for families most in need across Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
