Character Education in BOMLA

Central  |  March 8, 2017

Fostering Humanistic Culture is one of Tzu Chi’s core missions, and our volunteers are very active on this front, offering a Character Education program in a growing number of schools in the greater Dallas area.

It all began in 2011 when we were asked by the principal of the newly inaugurated Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA), to share Master Cheng Yen’s Jing Si Aphorisms with their students. These concise teachings offer a wealth of moral and character development guidance, and in a school whose mission is to develop young men into impactful leaders for a global humanistic society, they were a perfect fit.

Our Character Education program soon became a bimonthly class that is attended by students, faculty, and counselors. In 2012, the principal visited Tzu Chi’s global headquarters in Taiwan to learn more about Tzu Chi’s culture, vision and programs, and BOMLA and Hualien’s Tzu Chi High School became “sister schools”, further deepening the roots of Tzu Chi’s humanistic culture in the USA.

Given that BOMLA is a role model school in the Dallas Independent School District, our Character Education program has already expanded to more schools in the district, and our volunteers are dedicated to bringing it to as many students as they can, planting the seeds of humanistic values by nurturing character development.

To purify the world, we must first purify society. To purify society, we must purify families. To purify families, we must first purify the children.

With your support, we can expand the reach of our Character Education programs, building the foundation for a society where humanistic values and social and environmental responsibility reign.
