Betsy Toll is an eclectic practitioner and longtime student of Ram Dass and Joanna Macy, as well as Frank Ostaseski and Roshi Joan Halifax. In 2001, she founded Living Earth inPortland, Oregon, to provide opportunities to explore what it means to be fully human and how our awareness shapes the compassion and care we bring to the world. Since 2008, Betsy has volunteered in a hospital chaplaincy program providing non-denominational spiritual support to individuals facing trauma and end of life. She offers dharma circles, workshops, and retreats on dharma teachings and living and dying.
Robert Beatty is the founder and guiding teacher of the Portland Insight Meditation Community. He brings almost fifty years of Buddhist Dharma practice and training in western psychotherapy to his teaching. Robert is a member of the first wave of lay Theravada Buddhist teachers who brought Buddhism from Asia to America. Robert uses humor, poetry and drumming to teach meditation for everyday life, including intimate relationships, parenting, work, social engagement, and community.
Kelvin Chen is a graduate of National Taiwan University and got his Ph.D. degree from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. He worked for several major US corporations before starting his own antique importing and retailing business in Los Angeles and art craft manufacturing business in Beijing. Since retirement from his own businesses, Kelvin has devoted most of his time to traveling, sutra studies and volunteering for various Tzu Chi activities. He established Tzu Chi’s Chuan Fong prison outreach project in 2013 to correspond with inmates across the US and support Tzu Chi’s prison visit efforts. He and his team have successfully introduced Master Cheng Yen’s teachings to inmates, and have helped many of them to live more positive and productive lives.
