Camp Fire: Building the Bamboo Bank

December 11, 2018

Disaster Relief

Master Cheng Yen, Founder of Tzu Chi, started the foundation with just 30 homemakers who deposited a penny of their grocery money each day into bamboo banks for charitable contributions. Years later, the Tzu Chi Foundation has evolved into a global conglomerate helping people worldwide. Tzu Chi volunteer Christine Liu notes, “I think the bamboo bank is a great way of getting people to think a good deed and have an action of donating, even if it’s a quarter or a dollar bill.” The cycle of giving and receiving continues as witnessed with Paradise resident Robert Thurin, who, ten years ago, experienced both wildfire and the compassion of Tzu Chi. Thurin has been depositing “laundry change” into his bamboo bank for the past decade and intends to donate his savings to someone else in need.

Bamboo banks are the gift that keeps on giving. Let’s continue to make change with change.

Wishing the people of Paradise a warm and loving holiday season!
