NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

 

 

Tzu Chi USA Scholars is a scholarship program funded by Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation to recognize and provide financial assistance to outstanding college-bound high school graduates and continuing undergraduate students in selected areas of the United States. Tzu Chi USA Scholars are selected on the basis of their financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement. Each Scholar will receive an award of US$1,000.

COLLEGE-BOUND HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

Eligibility

  1. Applicant demonstrates financial need for college tuition and related expenses.

  2. Applicant is a U.S. high school graduating senior or equivalent.

  3. Applicant has a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  4. Applicant will enroll in an accredited U.S. college full-time for the academic year 2016-2017.

Requirements

  • 1. A completed Tzu Chi USA Scholarship application form for High School students.
  • 2. A copy of one of the three following documents demonstrating financial need and showing the name of the applicant:
    • Family's complete 2015 1040 U.S. Income Tax Return including all schedules, or
    • Family’s complete 2014 1040 U.S. Income Tax Return including all schedules and most recent 2015 W-2 and 1099, or
    • Any official documentation which serves as proof of financial hardship

Personal Writing (submit online)

  • 3. An autobiography (2 to 5 pages) which explains why you should be awarded a scholarship. Please include all of the following:
    • Reason for your financial need and how you intend to use this educational scholarship
    • Your personal and academic achievements with specific examples
    • Your academic and career plans with specific goals
    • Your past and current involvement, as well as future plans, towards making a difference in your community
  • 4. A two-page essay about Tzu Chi, based on the information you’ve gathered from websites, publications, news articles, etc. Please explain what you've learned about Tzu Chi that inspires you and why. Express your thoughts openly and honestly.

Additional Supporting Documents (to be mailed in)

  • 5. An official high school transcript
  • 6. Two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, and/or other advisors
 

CONTINUING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Eligibility

  1. Applicant must be a former Tzu Chi Scholarship recipient.
    Northwest Region scholarship recipients must be previously selected. Click here to confirm if your home zip code is located within the Northwest Region. Currently there is no continuing undergraduate scholarship in Mid-Atlantic Area. 

  2. Applicant demonstrates financial need for college tuition and related expenses.

  3. Applicant has a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  4. Applicant will enroll in an accredited U.S. college full-time for the academic year 2016.

  5. Applicant has completed 50 volunteering hours with Tzu Chi or another non-profit organization in the current academic year.

Requirements

  • 1. A completed Tzu Chi Scholars application form for continuing undergraduate students.
  • 2. A copy of one of the three following financial documents demonstrating financial needs and showing the name of the applicant:
    • Family’s complete 2015 1040 U.S. Income Tax Return including all schedules, or
    • Family’s complete 2014 1040 U.S. Income Tax Return including all schedules and most recent 2015 W-2 and 1099, or
    • Any official documentation which serves as proof of financial hardship

Personal Writing (submit online)

  • 3. An updated autobiography (2 to 5 pages) which focuses on the time period since you began college and explains why you should be awarded another scholarship. Include the following:
    • Your volunteer experience with Tzu Chi (or another nonprofit organization), and your future plans towards making a difference in your community
    • Reason for your financial need and how you intend to use this educational scholarship
    • Your personal and academic achievements with specific examples
    • Your academic and career plans with specific goals

Additional Supporting Documents (to be mailed in)

  • 4. All official college transcript(s) to date
  • 5. Written and signed proof of completion of 50 volunteering hours with Tzu Chi from Tzu Chi local team leaders or Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth mentors (Note: If you volunteered with another organization, please provide written and signed proof of your volunteering hours from their management.)

Application Process & Award Announcement

  1. Personal writing is uploaded with the online application form. Please mail all additional supporting documents to the Tzu Chi Foundation regional office that has been assigned to you and indicate: Attn: Tzu Chi Scholars Program
  2. The online application form must be submitted by March 11, 2016. Additional supporting documents must be postmarked by March 11, 2016 as well. The deadline is subject to change by regional offices. 
    NOTE: Northeast Region has extended the application deadline to March 30, 2016.
  3. A home visit and interview may be required in the application process.
  4. Tzu Chi College Scholarship recipients will be announced on May 18, 2016, and the regional award ceremonies will be held in May or June 2016.

* Only complete applications which include all required documents will be considered.

* Scholarship Award recipients will be informed of their award before May 18, 2016.

* Tzu Chi Scholars will be honored at a Scholarship Award Ceremony in a Tzu Chi USA regional office during May or June 2016.
